North Ayrshire Schools Making Strides Towards LGBT Education Equality
In a remarkable development, eight secondary schools in North Ayrshire are actively working towards achieving their LGBT charter for education. This news comes from the North Ayrshire Council (NAC), which has lauded the progress made by these schools in promoting inclusivity and equality.
Leading the way is Garnock Community Campus, which has earned a gold level accreditation for its exceptional efforts. Meanwhile, the youth services team of the local authority has been bestowed with a silver award. Other schools, namely Arran High School, Irvine Royal Academy, Greenwood, Kilwinning, and Ardrossan Academies, have all secured the bronze accreditation.
However, the journey towards achieving equality and inclusivity is far from over. Irvine Royal Academy is actively working towards obtaining the gold accreditation, while Kilwinning aims to progress to the silver level. Auchenharvie and Largs hope to secure the bronze accreditation in the upcoming school year.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the increasing number of accredited schools, Councillor Chloe Robertson, NAC’s young people’s champion, highlighted the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ staff and students. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community herself, she understands the discrimination faced by young individuals and the significance of initiatives like the charter program.
The LGBT charter for education offers four levels of awards, which include foundation, bronze, silver, and gold. The process of accreditation typically takes between 12 to 18 months, demonstrating the schools’ long-term commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.
This commendable progress in North Ayrshire schools aligns with the global efforts for LGBTQ+ rights and education equality. By actively engaging in the charter program, these schools are paving the way for a more inclusive and accepting society.
