The Maharashtra National Congress Party (NCP) has threatened to take legal action against nine MLAs who were disqualified after taking the oath. The NCP, under the leadership of Jayant Patil, is furious at the party rebels who took this step without informing the national and state president, Sharad Pawar.
According to Patil, this move is illegal and has been done without the knowledge of Sharad Pawar. The State Disciplinary Committee of NCP has sent a disqualification petition to Speaker Rahul Narvekar through hard copy, email, and WhatsApp. The party is seeking an early decision on the disqualification petition and has also informed the Election Commission.
The recent crisis unfolded when Ajit Pawar, nephew of Sharad Pawar, triggered a political uproar by joining the NDA government in the state, along with his supporting MLAs. He was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and his supporting MLAs were sworn in as ministers.
The NCP, established by Sharad Pawar in 1999, experienced a vertical split as Ajit Pawar broke ranks and joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government. Eight other NCP MLAs, including loyalists like Chhagan Bhujbal and Dilip Walse Patil, were also made ministers.
Patil clarified that these MLAs cannot be called traitors until their betrayal is proven. He stated that many MLAs are still in touch with the party.
The NCP is determined to take legal action against the rebel MLAs and seek their disqualification. Sharad Pawar, a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics, enjoys the support of workers and office bearers both within the state and across the country.
The situation remains tense as the NCP awaits a decision on their disqualification petition. The party has vowed to take steps for legal action as nine MLAs have become ineligible after taking the oath. The fate of these rebels now rests in the hands of Speaker Rahul Narvekar.
