A King County jury has ordered Monsanto, now owned by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, to pay $857 million in a legal battle over exposure to harmful chemicals at the Sky Valley Education Center in Monroe. The verdict includes $784 million in punitive damages and $73 million in compensatory damages awarded to seven plaintiffs. The two-month trial at King County Superior Court culminated in this decision. Hundreds of students, parents, teachers, and staff have accused Monsanto of manufacturing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that leaked from light fixtures, causing brain injuries and other health issues. The chemical was banned in 1979 by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Monsanto, which produced the PCBs, has been accused in multiple lawsuits of concealing the risks associated with its products. The recent verdict adds to the hefty cost that Monsanto has incurred in litigation, amounting to over $1.7 billion. The company plans to appeal the decision, claiming that the plaintiffs were not exposed to unsafe levels of PCBs, and therefore, their alleged injuries cannot be attributed to the chemicals.
