CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. – On Saturday night, the community of Clayton County came together to honor the memory of Herbert Williams, a beloved 78-year-old businessman who tragically lost his life when a tree fell on his car during a recent storm. The memorial took place outside Sound Decisionz car stereo shop, a business that Williams had established over 20 years ago and had become a cherished staple in the area.
Family, friends, customers, and local officials from Jonesboro attended the emotional balloon release ceremony, paying tribute to a man who had touched countless lives. Williams was known not only for his business acumen but also for his genuine compassion and willingness to help others.
His wife, Dorothy Williams, spoke fondly of her late husband’s generosity, recalling how he would often assist customers in need, even lending them money when they were short. People would come in the store with not enough money, Dorothy shared. There’s a young man that [would] come and borrow money until his check [came] in. People [would] come in here hungry. Herbert’s kindness and empathy left a lasting impact on those he encountered.
Dorothy admitted that she had not fully realized just how much her husband had influenced the community until his untimely passing. I did not know myself that he had this much impact because he’s matter of fact, she expressed. The loss of Herbert in such a tragic manner has left an indelible mark on Dorothy’s heart, especially because they had spoken about the very tree that claimed his life. That particular tree, we had been watching it together—me and my husband, she revealed. When he came into work, he said they need to cut that tree down. It’s leaning, and he said, ‘That’s a sad way to go. I hope I never experience a tree falling on me.’ And that’s why it hurt me so bad because that’s exactly how he left here.
Determined to prevent similar tragedies, Dorothy now plans to advocate for regular tree inspections and maintenance in the county. She hopes to create awareness and spur action to ensure that no other families have to endure the pain and loss that hers has suffered. I’m going to do that for him because he would do that for me, she declared.
Remembering Herbert’s entrepreneurial spirit, his daughter Kathy Butler is committed to carrying on his legacy. She spoke of the invaluable lessons he imparted, not just about hard work, but also about the importance of family. Kathy expressed her gratitude for having had such a remarkable father and pledged to honor his memory by embodying the same drive and dedication he exemplified throughout his life.
The funeral service for Herbert Williams will be held on Sunday at Center of Hope Ministries in Riverdale. Commencing at 2:30 p.m, the gathering will provide an opportunity for the community to pay their final respects to a man who left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
