A 70-year-old woman in Uganda has given birth to twins through in vitro fertilization (IVF), making her one of the world’s oldest mothers, according to health officials. Safina Namukwaya delivered a boy and a girl via cesarean section on November 29 at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Center in Kampala. The center, where Namukwaya underwent fertility treatment, stated that she is in good health and has been walking and talking since the birth. This remarkable achievement marks Namukwaya as Africa’s oldest mother, the hospital believes. The pregnancy was made possible by using donor eggs and her partner’s sperm due to her age. The twins were born prematurely at 31 weeks, with both weighing over 3 pounds. Namukwaya’s desire to have children stemmed partly from being mocked for her childlessness, leading her to seek fertility treatment. In addition to the twins, she already has a three-year-old daughter born through IVF at the same facility in 2020. Despite concerns and criticisms over the risks associated with late pregnancies, Namukwaya remains optimistic and grateful for her unique journey to motherhood.
