A new survey conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) has revealed that nearly half of the small businesses in Western Canada have been directly or indirectly affected by crime. The survey, titled Crime and Safety in Western Canada, found that 32% of these businesses reported experiencing property damage or theft.

The release of this report comes shortly after the launch of the Save Our Streets campaign, spearheaded by a coalition of businesses and organizations in British Columbia. The campaign aims to draw attention to the increasing crime rates and social deterioration observed on the streets from Dawson Creek to Vancouver. Major retailers such as London Drugs, Lululemon, and Save-On Foods, alongside the Surrey Board of Trade and Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers, are part of this group.

Statistics Canada has validated the rise in police-reported crime across Canada, showing a 4% increase in 2022. This marks the second consecutive year that crime statistics have seen an upward trend. Additionally, the violent crime severity index (CSI) in 2022 was the highest since 2007.

The prevalence of vandalism has become a significant concern for businesses in British Columbia, prompting the provincial government to announce a new grant aimed at assisting in repairs caused by vandals.

In addition to property damage and theft, businesses in Western Canada are increasingly worried about the safety of their employees and customers. The CFIB stated that B.C. small businesses are struggling to manage various issues such as waste and litter, loitering, and public intoxication. Consequently, many businesses have implemented measures to enhance security, adjusted their operations, and provided additional safety training for their staff. Some businesses are even offering higher wages to attract and retain employees, exacerbating the labor shortage challenges.

The CFIB’s report was based on a survey conducted among 2,809 small business owners in Western Canada between May 4 and May 25, 2023. The survey included 348 participants from B.C., 320 from Alberta, 90 from Saskatchewan, and 114 from Manitoba.

The survey findings highlight that Manitoba and B.C. face the highest level of concern regarding crime. Among the respondents, 32% reported experiencing direct impacts from crime, including theft and property damage.

To address the prevalent crime issues and create a safer community, the CFIB is urging governments to address the underlying societal issues contributing to crime, such as affordable housing and mental health and addictions. They also call for increased resources for small businesses, collaborative efforts among government entities and community organizations, improvements in safety measures in commercial areas and public spaces, and a reevaluation of bail rules and better access to mental health and addictions services for repeat offenders.

As crime rates continue to rise, it is crucial for governments and stakeholders to work together in implementing data-driven and evidence-based policies and programs to combat crime and ensure the safety of businesses, employees, and customers.
