The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added three Omani cities to its prestigious Global Network of Learning Cities. The cities of Muscat, Nizwa, and Sur were chosen for their commitment to promoting lifelong learning and sustainable development.

The inclusion of these Omani cities into the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities aligns with the Ministry of Education’s vision, represented by the Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. In collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, the initiative aims to showcase Omani cities on the global stage, highlighting their tourism and cultural potential. Additionally, it seeks to raise awareness about education for sustainable development within local communities and elevate the Sultanate of Oman’s international rankings, including the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals.

The announcement was made during a virtual ceremony organized by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. Representatives from various newly listed cities around the world participated in the event. This acknowledgment reflects the efforts made by Muscat, Nizwa, and Sur to embody the principle of lifelong learning in their respective communities.

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities was established by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning in 2012. Its primary objective is to enhance lifelong learning practices in cities worldwide. This is achieved through fostering dialogue on education policies, forging connections between city administrations and educational institutions, and strengthening partnerships among cities across the globe.

A Learning City, as recognized by the network, leverages all available resources in different sectors to foster comprehensive learning for all individuals, ranging from basic to higher education. Moreover, it encourages learning within families and local communities, facilitates practical learning for employment, and embraces modern educational tools to cultivate a culture of lifelong learning.

By empowering individuals and fostering social cohesion, Learning Cities contribute to the economic and cultural growth of societies, ultimately working towards the achievement of sustainable development goals.

The inclusion of these Omani cities into UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities showcases their dedication to providing quality education and ensuring lifelong learning opportunities for their residents. This achievement will not only help promote the cities’ tourism and cultural potential but also serve as an inspiration for other cities around the world. As Oman continues to prioritize education and sustainable development, it is well-positioned to set an example for global learning initiatives.

The recognition received by Muscat, Nizwa, and Sur highlights the significant strides made by Oman in the field of education and its commitment to lifelong learning. As these cities join the distinguished network of learning cities, they are poised to make further advancements in education, foster international collaborations, and contribute to the global movement towards a more educated and sustainable future.
