24X7 Generic Medicine Shops to Open in Government Hospitals in Maharashtra
The Maharashtra government has taken a significant step towards improving healthcare accessibility by announcing the opening of 24X7 generic medicine shops in government hospitals across the state. Under the Centre’s ‘Jan Aushadhi’ (generic medicine) scheme, the state government has partnered with the National Federation of Farmers’ Procurement and Processing and Retailing Cooperatives of India Ltd (NACOF) to establish these shops on the hospital campuses.
This move aims to address the issue of patients having to purchase medicines from outside sources as state-run hospitals often do not have all the required medications. Branded medicines are known to be expensive, while generic alternatives are available at significantly lower prices, with the price difference sometimes reaching up to 70%. By providing generic medicines at these shops, the government intends to alleviate the financial burden on patients, reducing their healthcare expenses.
The generic medicine shops will be allotted an area of approximately 200 to 250 square feet on a rental basis for a period of 20 years. After a review, the rent agreement can be extended for an additional 10 years. In case any specific generic medicine is not available, the shops will have the authority to sell the branded version of the medicine at a discounted price, offering a 5% discount to patients.
To ensure the smooth functioning of these shops, the NACOF has been appointed due to its expertise in setting up and operating similar stores in prominent hospitals in Delhi, including Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, and SK Hospital. The NACOF already operates in 21 states and its annual turnover for the year 2021-22 is reported to be ₹3,672 crore.
This initiative is set to improve healthcare accessibility for the people of Maharashtra, as they will now have easy access to affordable and quality generic medicines within the premises of government hospitals. Additionally, the rental agreement’s periodic revision every three years will ensure transparency and fair pricing for both parties involved.
With the successful implementation of this scheme, more patients will have access to necessary medications without having to incur exorbitant costs.
