22-Year-Old Indian Student Killed in Sydney Crash while Working as Uber Eats Rider

A tragic incident occurred in Sydney last month when a 22-year-old Indian student, Akshay Doultani, lost his life in a collision between his bike and an SUV. Hailing from Mumbai, Akshay had come to Sydney in February on a scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in finance at Macquarie University. Despite his aspirations and dreams, this young student’s life was cut short while working as a food delivery rider.

Labor senator Tony Sheldon confirmed Akshay’s identity in parliament, revealing that he was the 12th food delivery rider to be killed while on the job since 2017. Akshay’s story resonates deeply, as he had come to Australia to fulfill his dreams and provide a better future for his family. Tragically, his life was taken away at the intersection of Blaxland Road and Epping Road in Epping while he was making a delivery on his scooter.

Akshay’s cousin expressed the family’s devastation, explaining that Akshay’s sole motivation for going abroad was to improve the lives of his loved ones and ensure they could enjoy a better lifestyle. To pay his fees and support his family, he worked as a food delivery rider at least three times a week. The loss of their only son has been an unbearable blow for his parents.

As the investigation into this fatal crash unfolds, the New South Wales (NSW) Police and Safework NSW are determining the circumstances that led to this tragic event. Senator Sheldon seized the opportunity to highlight the dangers faced by gig economy workers, urging for transport reforms that would provide basic employment rights and fair compensation for approximately 250,000 individuals working in the industry.

Uber Eats, in response to the incident, emphasized their commitment to the safety of their delivery workers. The company stated that they have implemented policies aimed at enhancing road safety and that their delivery people in Australia are covered by a support package tailored to their needs.

While this incident sheds light on the risks faced by gig economy workers, it is essential to maintain a balanced viewpoint when considering the industry as a whole. Delivery riders often seek flexibility in their work, allowing them to juggle multiple commitments, pursue education, or support their families. However, safety concerns and the need for proper compensation cannot be overlooked.

The tragic loss of Akshay Doultani serves as a reminder that more needs to be done to ensure the well-being and protection of gig economy workers. It is an opportunity for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and companies like Uber Eats to collaborate and facilitate the implementation of fair and comprehensive measures that address the challenges faced by these workers.

In memory of Akshay and the 12 food delivery riders who lost their lives while working, it is crucial to reflect on the inherent risks and limitations of the gig economy workforce. By valuing their contributions, offering adequate protection, and striving for improvements in this evolving landscape, we can honor their memories and strive for a safer future for all workers.
