Apple alumni across Europe have founded a vast array of start-ups in fields such as climate, fintech, and AI, worth over $180 billion, according to data from Dealroom. These businesses range from customisable footwear start-up, Alto, to intelligent home monitoring system, Cocoon, and solar firm, Sun Roofs. Founders attributed their success to the grit, resilience, and ideation skills developed during their time at Apple. However, some cited the drawbacks of the tech giant’s culture, such as its culture of secrecy and instances of intellectual property theft. Nevertheless, by 2022, ex-Apple staffers had registered 419 start-ups, triple 2015’s figure of 163. The 22 European start-ups that most outperformed expectations in the 12 months to May 2023 are VC-backed firms founded from 2015 onwards and valued at $15 million or above.
