Pre-orders are now open for the highly-anticipated 2024 Peugeot 408, a sleek plug-in hybrid fastback set to hit Australian roads in the third quarter of this year. The Peugeot 408 comes in a single GT variant, priced at $67,990 before on-road costs. Customers can secure their pre-order either online or through a Peugeot dealership.

The 408, which was unveiled in June 2022, was initially scheduled to be released in the late months of 2023. Positioned between the plug-in hybrid version of the 308 and the PHEV-only 508, the 408 offers a unique choice for customers in this segment. Its closest competitor is the Cupra Formentor VZe, priced at $64,990 before on-road costs.

Under the hood, the 2024 Peugeot 408 boasts a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine delivering 132kW of power and 250Nm of torque. This is paired with an 81kW/320Nm electric motor, a 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Together, these components generate a total system output of 165kW and 360Nm.

When it comes to efficiency, the Peugeot 408 impresses with a claimed WLTP electric driving range of 60km and a combined cycle fuel economy of just 1.5L/100km. Additionally, it features a 3.7kW onboard charger and a 40L fuel tank, ensuring convenience and extended driving ranges.

In terms of dimensions, the Peugeot 408 measures 4685mm in length, 1859mm in width (2062mm including the mirrors), and 1485mm in height. It sits on a 2790mm wheelbase and offers 471L of boot space, which expands to 1545L with the rear seats folded. The vehicle also has a braked towing capacity of 1400kg and a weight of 1684kg.

Peugeot provides excellent servicing and warranty options for the 408. The vehicle is backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, along with an eight-year, 160,000km battery warranty. Servicing is required every 12 months or 20,000km, and the first five services are caped at affordable prices ranging from $425 to $900. Peugeot also offers pre-paid service plans, allowing customers to save up to $960.

In terms of safety, the Peugeot 408 has not yet been assessed by ANCAP, but it received a four-star rating from Euro NCAP in 2022. The vehicle’s standard safety features include adaptive cruise control with stop/go, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention alert, lane departure warning, lane centring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. It also comes equipped with various airbags and advanced safety systems.

The Peugeot 408 is packed with standard equipment, including 20-inch Monolithe alloy wheels, matrix LED headlights, a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB digital radio, proximity entry with push-button start, and a hands-free power tailgate. Other features include a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, massaging front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and an electric parking brake. The vehicle also offers three years of Connected Services access, which includes car park and fuel station information.

Customers can choose from a range of colors for the Peugeot 408, with Obsession Blue being the standard option. Okenite White, Sellenium Grey, and Nera Black finishes are available at an additional cost of $690, while Elixir Red is offered as a premium option for $1050.
