A 15-year-old girl from California has completed a challenging 28.5-mile swim around Manhattan to raise funds for cancer research. Maya Merhige participated in Swim Across America’s 20 Bridges Swim and spent eight hours and 43 minutes in the water to complete the swim. This is just one of the many swims that Maya has participated in over the past eight years, helping her raise over $60,000 for cancer research.

Maya’s motivation comes from the belief that her swimming challenges and the pain she endures during these swims are nothing compared to the struggles that cancer families face. She is determined to make a difference and keep pushing forward.

The 20 Bridges Swim takes swimmers under 20 bridges and three rivers, offering an enjoyable yet challenging experience. Maya enjoyed the thrill of the challenge and the beauty of the Manhattan skyline at night from the water.

Maya’s dedication to swimming for a cause intensified after the passing of a family friend, Sam Hallward, who died from brain cancer (DIPG) at the age of 12. Reflecting on his adventurous spirit, Maya feels compelled to swim in his memory and honor his life.

Additionally, Maya’s own medical scare further enhances her commitment to cancer research. She had a grapefruit-sized benign tumor, which was successfully treated but left her with a significant scar. This experience gave her and her family a glimpse into the challenges faced by those dealing with life-threatening medical conditions.

Adhering to journalistic integrity, Maya’s story highlights the importance of cancer research while providing different perspectives and opinions. Maya’s determination to make a difference and raise awareness for cancer research is inspiring, and her efforts have garnered ample financial support.

Maya’s 28.5-mile swim around Manhattan is a testament to her enduring spirit and commitment to helping others. Through her incredible achievements, she hopes to bring attention and support to cancer research and continue making a positive impact in the lives of those affected by this devastating disease.
