The Medical Guild, an association of medical doctors employed by the Lagos State Government, has called on the state government to improve the welfare conditions of healthcare workers. According to the guild, 15 doctors have died within a span of six months in the state. Dr. Sa’eid Ahmad, the Chairman of the guild, made this appeal during a news conference held in Lagos in preparation for the guild’s Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference.

Dr. Ahmad highlighted the challenges faced by the guild in the past year, including co-morbidities exacerbated by manpower shortages and overwork among members. He also mentioned the tragic incident of the collapsed elevator in the General Hospital, Odan, which claimed the life of Dr. Vwaere Diaso, a young doctor. Furthermore, there have been multiple deaths among colleagues, adding to the sense of loss experienced by the guild.

In light of these events, Dr. Ahmad emphasized the urgent need for improved welfare conditions and increased engagement with the government to prioritize the health and lives of healthcare workers. The guild has developed a comprehensive position paper that draws attention to the root causes of welfare problems and proposes practical solutions.

The guild has also taken action to support its members, with the Office of Social Welfare spending N21.5 million to respond promptly to sick members and provide support to the families of deceased members. Additionally, the guild has implemented housing mortgage and automobile facilities to improve accommodation and mobility for healthcare workers.

Dr. Ahmad commended the government for resolving issues of stagnation and demotion among in-service trained specialists and implementing financial measures since August 2023.

Regarding the forthcoming AGM and Scientific Conference, Dr. Ahmad mentioned the various activities planned, including a medical outreach program, a cancer awareness campaign, and lecture series. He emphasized the importance of tapping into the intellectual expertise of health policymakers and stakeholders to enhance policy formulation and implementation, ultimately benefiting the well-being of the people.

In conclusion, the Medical Guild’s call for better welfare conditions for healthcare workers in Lagos State is driven by the loss of 15 doctors within six months. The guild urges the government to prioritize the health and lives of healthcare workers and has presented a position paper outlining practical solutions to address the welfare problems. Despite the challenges faced, the guild remains committed to supporting its members and delivering healthcare services to the people of Lagos.
