Austin Degler, a Hamilton middle schooler born with dwarfism, has passed away at the age of 14. Despite his physical challenges, Austin’s vibrant personality and positive outlook on life left a lasting impact on those who knew him. On December 30, Austin tragically succumbed to meningitis in his sleep, leaving his family and community in shock.

Austin, who attended Wilson Middle School, was diagnosed with achondroplasia dwarfism. However, according to his mother, Michelle Joseph, Austin never let his disability define him. He embraced his uniqueness and refused to let others’ reactions dampen his spirit. Michelle fondly remembers her son’s infectious smile, which had the power to brighten anyone’s day. His smile could change your mood, she said.

Michelle described Austin as charismatic, resilient, and an amazing storyteller. He played the trumpet in the school band and enjoyed fishing, supporting the Cincinnati Bengals, and participating in baseball as a member of the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League from 2016 to 2019. Austin’s involvement in sports showcased his joy and fulfillment, bringing a smile to everyone’s face.

Jesse Weisbrod, the principal at Wilson Middle School, spoke highly of Austin, describing him as a friend to all. The entire school community deeply mourns his loss, recognizing the profound impact he had on those around him.

While coping with the devastating loss of her son, Michelle Joseph plans to advocate for meningitis educational programs. Meningococcal disease rates have decreased significantly in recent years, but adolescents and young adults remain at higher risk. Meningitis, an inflammation of the brain and spinal cord tissues, is often caused by infection, particularly bacterial meningitis, which can be fatal within 24 hours.

Visitation for Austin Degler will take place on Wednesday at the Brown Dawson Flick Funeral Home in Hamilton. A funeral service will follow, officiated by Pastor Patrick Davis. Austin will be laid to rest at Hickory Flat Cemetery on Thursday.

Austin is survived by his parents, Michelle Joseph and Mitchell Degler, as well as his siblings, Jesse Peyton Degler, Harley Degler, and Raven Treadway. He is also remembered by his grandparents, Elinor (Dale) Gabbard and Sarah Darlas. Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Peter and Donna Degler, Jane Ramey, and Dennis Joseph.

In memory of Austin Degler, memorial contributions can be made to the funeral home to assist the family with funeral expenses. The funeral home can be contacted at (513) 895-5412. Alternatively, donations can be submitted online at http://mealtrain.com/vkr72y.

Austin’s passing is a devastating loss for the Hamilton community, and his memory will forever be cherished by those whose lives he touched. The strength, resilience, and joy he exhibited in the face of adversity will continue to inspire others. Austin’s story serves as a powerful reminder to embrace uniqueness and spread positivity, no matter the circumstances.
