A federal grand jury has indicted a 61-year-old Texas man, Steven Robert Sablan, for the abduction and sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl. The horrifying incident began in San Antonio when Sablan approached the victim while driving a gray Nissan Sentra. He allegedly threatened her at gunpoint and forced her into his car, telling her that he would harm her if she refused.
Trapped and fearing for her life, the young victim complied with Sablan’s demands. He then proceeded to drive her to California, where he continued to sexually assault her multiple times, according to court documents and the indictment. During their journey, Sablan mentioned the victim’s age, to which she revealed she was only 13 years old. Taking advantage of her vulnerability, he further exploited her by claiming he could take her on a cruise ship to visit a friend in Australia.
Over the course of two days, the perpetrator sexually assaulted the victim on multiple occasions as they traveled across state lines. However, the brave girl saw a moment of opportunity while Sablan left the car to do laundry in Long Beach. She quickly grabbed a piece of paper and wrote Help me! in hopes that someone would notice and come to her rescue.
Fortunately, a witness spotted the distressed girl and immediately alerted law enforcement authorities. When the officers arrived at the scene, they observed Sablan outside the vehicle and saw the victim, who silently mouthed the word Help, still trapped inside. The officers conducted a search of the car and discovered a black BB gun, a Help me sign, and a pair of handcuffs, raising serious concerns about Sablan’s intentions.
Further investigation revealed that the victim had been reported as a runaway missing person from San Antonio. The traumatic ordeal she endured has come to light, thanks to her bravery and the swift action of the authorities.
Steven Robert Sablan now faces charges of kidnapping and transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to spend the rest of his life in federal prison.
