111 Players Join Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence for World Championships Preparation

Hockey Canada is gearing up for the upcoming 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge and the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship by enlisting the talents of 111 players in their Program of Excellence. This news comes as the organization recently held its summer meetings, where the selected athletes participated to prepare themselves for these major international events.

Among the impressive group of athletes, two players have ties to Red Deer. Nate Danielson, a forward from the Brandon Wheat Kings and a native of Red Deer, was one of the 45 U20 players in attendance. Luke Vlooswyk, a defenseman and the Red Deer Rebels’ first-round selection in the WHL Prospects Draft for 2022, was among the 66 U17 players involved.

According to Hockey Canada’s Director of player personnel, Alan Millar, these meetings provided the perfect platform to kick off a new season and begin the necessary preparations for these significant tournaments. The meetings aimed to introduce prospective national team players to the Program of Excellence and equip them for international competition.

During the virtual meetings, the players delved into various aspects of the Program of Excellence and other essential topics. They received sport safety presentations, familiarized themselves with short-term international competition preparation, and engaged in meetings with Hockey Canada’s management group. These discussions aimed to enhance the players’ evolution as athletes and tap into the invaluable leadership experience offered by the Program of Excellence.

As the 2023-24 season approaches, the selected players will undergo evaluations with their respective clubs before the final rosters are set for the Canadian teams participating in the World U17 Hockey Challenge and the IIHF World Junior Championship.

With the inclusion of athletes from various backgrounds and regions, these international events promise to showcase the tremendous talent pool in Canada. The Program of Excellence acts as a crucial stepping stone for aspiring hockey players, nurturing their skills and honing their abilities on the path to potential national team representation.

Hockey fans and enthusiasts eagerly await the upcoming tournaments as they serve as a platform for emerging talents to shine on an international stage. The dedication and preparation exhibited by the 111 players joining Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence set the stage for an exciting season ahead, filled with intense competition and the pursuit of excellence.
