An 11-year-old girl from Mumbai has allegedly been sexually assaulted by her in-laws and husband, leading the Mumbai Police to initiate an investigation into the matter. The victim’s mother, a prominent gynaecologist and surgeon based in Ghatkopar, approached the Tilak Nagar police and lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the girl’s grandmother, father, and aunt.
According to the mother’s statement, the sexual assaults took place over several years, starting from 2014 until 2021. She revealed that when her daughter was just two and a half years old, her grandmother, who is now 74, stimulated the child’s genitals in the presence of the aunt without her knowledge. Despite repeatedly informing her husband about the incidents, he failed to take any action.
The mother, who runs her own private clinic, expressed concern about the mental trauma inflicted on her daughter. She waited until the child became more stable before approaching the police with the case.
The child’s father resides in Singapore, her grandmother is also a respected gynaecologist obstetrician with her own clinic, and her aunt is a professor at a university in the United States, according to the police.
Senior Police Inspector Deepak Bagul confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the allegations. Given that the incidents reportedly began in 2014 and involved accused individuals based abroad and a senior citizen in Mumbai, the police are treating the case with caution. The accused will be summoned for interrogation, and evidence will be gathered to support the allegations.
A case has been registered under sections 354 (assault or using criminal force on a woman to outrage her modesty) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as sections 8 (sexual assault), 10 (aggravated sexual assault), 12 (sexual harassment), and 21 (failure to report or record a case) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The Mumbai Police aims to handle the investigation with sensitivity, prioritizing the well-being of the victim and ensuring justice is served.
