The Karnataka Road Transport Corporations (RTCs) have estimated that around 1.2 crore women in the Indian state may apply for smart cards to avail free travel on all state-run buses. The newly launched ‘Shakti’ scheme has guaranteed free bus rides for women in an effort to boost their mobility. On the first day of the scheme’s launch, more than 5.7 lakh women took free rides on the buses operated by the four RTCs between 1 pm and midnight. This caused the RTCs to incur costs up to Rs 1.4 crore. Among the four RTCs, BMTC saw the highest number of women passengers taking free rides at over two lakh. However, the free ridership was the lowest for Kalyana Karnataka RTC at just over 50,000.
KSRTC MD, Anbukumar, said, We have received a good response from women since the launch of the service. In the coming days, we expect the number of travellers to increase even further. We have estimated that 1.2 crore women will apply for smart cards under the ‘Shakti’ scheme, though all women who have smart cards may not travel on a regular basis. The new scheme will enable working women, students and homemakers to travel at no cost on a state-run bus, while creating an environment of safety and dignity for women commuters. The scheme will not only empower women, but also help to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the state.
