The Congress-led government in Karnataka will launch Shakthi, a free bus travel scheme for all women using state-owned buses. Smart cards will be provided, but until then, documents such as Aadhaar can be used for travel. The government estimates that 40 lakhs of women travel on state-owned buses every day and that number is set to rise after the scheme's launch. Shakthi is the first scheme of five promised during the election campaign and is part of the government's guarantees to provide support for unemployed graduates, free power for households and 10 kilograms of rice to BPL families.
