BIS has issued quality control standards for footwear, bulletproof jackets, and protective clothing for firefighters. The move is intended to improve the quality of domestic products, while reducing sub-standard imports from countries like China. Standards for 24 footwear products will be rolled out gradually from January 1, 2024. Protective clothing and geo-textiles-related products will become mandatory from October 10, 2021. The new quality control regime aims to promote the Indian manufacturing industry and benefit consumers.
