Playing an Instrument Boosts Memory and Cognitive Performance as We Age
Playing an instrument or singing in a choir boosts memory and cognitive performance as we age, according to a new study. Findings show that musical people have better executive function and memory than those with less musicality. Continued engagement in such activities provides ongoing brain health benefits, with current amateur musicians showing the highest cognitive performance. Singing also has benefits, particularly for executive function. Listening to music alone, however, does not improve cognition. The study suggests that learning an instrument or engaging in musical activities may help prevent cognitive decline or dementia in the future.
