Wrestlers Protest Turns Violent at Jantar Mantar: Clash with Police Erupts
A protest by wrestlers at Jantar Mantar in the national capital took a violent turn as clashes broke out between the protesters and the police. In response, heavy security has been deployed at the site to prevent any further escalation. The protest stems from a sexual assault case filed against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The Supreme Court is set to hear the plea of seven women wrestlers who are demanding Singh’s arrest.
According to Delhi Police, they received information that a large number of people would gather at Jantar Mantar to support the protesting wrestlers. As a result, security measures were implemented, including the placement of barricades on roads leading to Central Delhi.
The tension between the wrestlers and the police intensified when the former alleged that they were manhandled and verbally abused by the police personnel. The protesters claimed that some of the policemen were intoxicated and acted aggressively towards both male and female protestors. However, the Delhi Police stated that the altercation arose when supporters of the wrestlers attempted to bring folding beds to the protest site without permission.
The situation further escalated when notable figures, including Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti and Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda, arrived at Jantar Mantar. Bharti was detained, along with two others, after a minor altercation. Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal, who also visited the site, expressed concern for the safety of the wrestlers and questioned why Singh has not been arrested yet.
The wrestlers have been protesting for 12 days, demanding justice and the arrest of Brij Bhushan. The Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha also visited the protest site to show her support.
The protests were initially sparked by allegations of sexual harassment and exploitation of female wrestlers by Singh, leading to the registration of two FIRs against him. The wrestlers, including Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia and World Championships medalist Vinesh Phogat, have been seeking accountability and justice.
It is crucial to manage the situation at Jantar Mantar carefully to avoid any further confrontation. The deployment of heavy security is necessary to maintain peace and ensure the safety of all individuals involved. The Supreme Court’s hearing of the wrestlers’ plea will be a significant moment that may shed light on the future course of action in this case.
