Unbeaten Super Middleweight Contender Diego Pacheco Sets Sights on Edgar Berlanga Showdown
Diego Pacheco, the promising super middleweight contender, is eyeing a potential matchup against the unbeaten Edgar Berlanga. Pacheco’s impressive performance against Marcelo Coceres caught the attention of promoter Eddie Hearn, who believes he is ready for a step up in competition.
Pacheco (20-0, 17 KOs), at just 22 years old, showcased his skills with a ninth-round knockout victory over Coceres (32-6-1, 18 KOs) at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California. Hearn expressed his satisfaction with Pacheco’s performance and expressed his desire to see him face Berlanga next.
However, an immediate fight between Pacheco and Berlanga might not be realistic as Berlanga (21-0, 16 KOs) has signed with Matchroom and is focused on securing big fights against the likes of Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia. Hearn acknowledges that Berlanga is seeking high-profile opponents and might view a matchup with Pacheco as a way for Hearn to boost the rising star’s popularity.
Berlanga’s recent performances have raised concerns about his ability to face formidable opposition. He has failed to secure knockout victories in his last five fights and has struggled against opponents that top-tier super middleweights would likely dominate. This decline in performance could make a fight against the tall knockout artist Pacheco a challenging proposition for Berlanga.
Furthermore, Berlanga faced difficulties against Coceres when they fought in 2021, with Coceres even managing to drop him in the ninth round. Although Coceres displayed a different level of skill against Pacheco, it still raises questions about Berlanga’s vulnerability in the ring.
Despite these concerns, Hearn believes that a showdown between Pacheco and Berlanga in 2024 would be a massive fight. He sees Pacheco’s popularity growing and envisions a path to a world championship opportunity in 2025. With Canelo Alvarez holding all the belts at 168 pounds, Hearn anticipates that the titles will eventually become vacant, opening the door for Pacheco to challenge for them.
However, Pacheco will face significant hurdles in his quest for a title, particularly in dealing with the likes of David Benavidez and David Morrell, who are currently on a different level from him. Benavidez may move up to 175 pounds soon, but Morrell will still be a formidable challenge for Pacheco.
Hearn stresses that there is no rush with Pacheco’s progression and believes that the matchmaking for his fights has been perfect thus far. They plan to gradually increase the level of competition for Pacheco until he reaches a world champion caliber.
Diego Pacheco’s future looks promising, and fans can anticipate him facing tougher opponents in the near future. As he continues to impress in the super middleweight division, a potential matchup against Edgar Berlanga could be a highly anticipated event that showcases the talents of both fighters.
