Tragic Church Roof Collapse in Mexico Kills Multiple Worshipers
During a Sunday Mass in northern Mexico, a devastating incident occurred as the roof of a church collapsed, resulting in an undetermined number of fatalities among approximately 30 trapped parishioners. The incident took place at the Santa Cruz church in Ciudad Madero, adjacent to the port city of Tampico. The Tamaulipas state police reported that around 100 people were present in the church at the time, with approximately 30 still trapped under the debris. Bishop José Armando Alvarez of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tampico revealed that the tragic event occurred as worshippers were receiving communion, leading to the sudden cave-in of the roof. The Diocese shared a statement on social media, expressing their gratitude for the successful rescue of individuals who were pulled out alive from beneath the wreckage. Bishop Alvarez also urged individuals to donate wood to help reinforce the remaining structure of the church while rescue teams work tirelessly to save any survivors. At the scene, various organizations including the National Guard, state police, civil defense office, and the Red Cross are collaborating in their efforts to rescue those still trapped.
Photographs published by local media exhibit the extent of the damage, with parts of the concrete and brick structure, including the roof, collapsed around the pews. Notably, the roof, primarily composed of poured concrete, was seen resting precariously on top of some of the remaining intact pews, potentially leaving air pockets that could harbor survivors. A recorded message from Bishop Alvarez emphasized the ongoing efforts to retrieve individuals from beneath the debris, expressing the difficult moment the community is experiencing.
It is worth noting that building collapses during earthquakes are not uncommon in Mexico. However, the National Seismological Service did not report any seismic activity that could have triggered such a disaster during the time of the incident. Furthermore, there is no immediate evidence of an explosion being the cause. Ciudad Madero, situated approximately 500 kilometers south of Brownsville, Texas, is located in Tamaulipas, a state known for drug cartel violence. Nevertheless, the city has been relatively spared from such violence due to its proximity to neighboring Veracruz state.
