Sikh Separatist’s Threat to Air India Flights Raises Safety Concerns
A video warning issued by Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the head of Sikhs for Justice, has created panic and fear among travelers, raising significant safety concerns. In the video circulating on social media, Pannun urged Sikh people not to fly via Air India on November 19th, stating that there would be a global blockade. He emphasized that traveling by Air India on that day would endanger one’s life.
The threat comes at a time when India is hosting the final match of the international men’s cricket World Cup on the same date. Pannun suggested that this would be an opportune moment to showcase the alleged genocide of Sikhs in India and pin the blame on the country. Furthermore, he expressed intentions to rename certain airports once Punjab is liberated, referencing the assassins of former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.
This alarming video has not only caused distress among the public but has also raised concerns at political and diplomatic levels. Indian officials have expressed their intention to discuss the threat with Canadian authorities, as Pannun is based in Canada. In response, the Canadian government and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have confirmed that they are investigating the possible terror threat. Canada’s transport minister emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring aviation security and promised to take all necessary measures to keep Canadians safe.
In light of these developments, India has requested Canada to enhance security measures for Air India flights departing from Vancouver and Toronto. While specific details regarding the measures have not been disclosed, it is evident that both countries are taking the situation seriously.
Even the World Sikh Organization (WSO), a vocal supporter of Khalistan, expressed concern about the threats. The organization posted on Platform X, stating that any innuendo or threats concerning airline safety are unacceptable. They stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all air travelers.
The tensions between India and Canada have been escalating, particularly following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s accusations against India in relation to the fatal shooting of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The growing concerns surrounding the threat to Air India flights emphasize the need for swift action and cooperation between India and Canada. The dissemination of false information that endangers the safety of an aircraft is considered a severe offense punishable by life imprisonment under section 77 of the Canadian Criminal Code.
It is crucial that both countries work together to address these security concerns and ensure the safety and well-being of their citizens.
