School Counselor Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting 10-Year-Old Student
In a shocking incident, a school counselor has been arrested and charged with assaulting a 10-year-old student in Middleborough. Steven Adamec, a 50-year-old from Attleboro, allegedly struck the child across the face and forcefully pushed them into a door. This incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns about the safety of students.
The incident took place at the READS Collaborative, an organization that provides therapeutic services and educational programming for students with emotional or social challenges, as well as those who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing. The police were alerted to the incident when they received a report of a school employee assaulting a student.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that Adamec, who served as an adjustment counselor, had struck the 10-year-old student after an argument. The altercation escalated when Adamec dragged the student by the arm and forcefully shoved them into a door while escorting them out of a classroom. Subsequently, with his left hand, he struck the student across the side of their face.
Following the incident, Adamec was promptly arrested at the school and appeared in Wareham District Court for arraignment on Monday. He faces multiple charges, including assault and battery on a child with injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, threat to commit a crime/solicitation of a crime, and assault and battery on a person with an intellectual disability.
Dina Medeiros, the executive director of the READS Collaborative, addressed concerned parents in a letter, ensuring them that the staff member involved in the incident no longer works for the organization. She emphasized that the actions of this individual do not reflect the caring and compassionate nature of the READS staff.
This distressing incident raises questions about the safety protocols in place within educational institutions. It serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilant oversight and regular training for staff members who work closely with students. The incident has brought to the forefront the need for comprehensive measures to ensure the well-being of all students.
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the extent of the incident and whether any other factors contributed to the counselor’s alleged violent behavior. The priority now is to support the affected student and their family, ensuring they receive the necessary care and resources.
Instances such as these highlight the significance of promoting safe and supportive environments within schools. It is crucial to foster an atmosphere where students feel protected and empowered to report any untoward incidents. The education system must continue working towards building trust, empathy, and respect among all stakeholders to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
As the case develops, it is essential to maintain transparency and provide updates to the concerned community. The impact of this incident should be a catalyst for conversations and actions aimed at creating a safer educational environment for all students.
