Seldom-used running back Dalvin Cook of the New York Jets has reportedly expressed interest in being traded to either the Baltimore Ravens or the Dallas Cowboys, according to sources. The Jets signed Cook to a one-year deal in the summer, hoping to form a formidable RB duo with 2022 rookie standout Breece Hall. However, Cook has been given limited playing time, with only 41 carries in the team’s first seven games.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Cook had his sights set on joining either the Ravens or the Cowboys. Unfortunately for Cook, neither team showed much interest in addressing their running back position before the trade deadline. While Cook simply wants an opportunity to play, it seems that the Jets are planning to keep him on their roster for now, considering the long and arduous NFL season.
The Cowboys currently have Tony Pollard as their lead running back, who is on track for another 1,000-yard season. With 423 rushing yards and two touchdowns in seven games, Pollard has been a key contributor to the Cowboys’ offense. Similarly, the Ravens boast a potent rushing attack led by dual-threat quarterback Lamar Jackson, as well as running backs Justice Hill and Gus Edwards.
Although neither team had a pressing need for Cook, his caliber as a player could have provided a boost to any offense. It is surprising that the Jets did not ultimately trade Cook, especially considering they have shown little intention of featuring him prominently in their offensive schemes this season.
On the other hand, the Jets have valid reasons to rely on Hall as their primary running back as long as he continues to produce on the field. With 443 rushing yards and two touchdowns in seven games, Hall has proven himself as a reliable and effective option for the Jets.
In conclusion, Dalvin Cook’s desire for a trade to either the Baltimore Ravens or the Dallas Cowboys did not come to fruition before the trade deadline. Despite his limited playing time with the Jets, the team has chosen to retain him for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, the Jets have found success with Breece Hall as their lead running back, making Cook’s role on the team uncertain. Both the Ravens and the Cowboys, while not in immediate need of a running back, could have benefitted from Cook’s talents.
