Philippine Crime Rate Sees Significant Decrease in 8 Months, PNP Vows Justice for Teen’s Death
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has announced a substantial decline in the country’s crime rate, with a 6.19 percent reduction during the first eight months of this year. The data, covering the period from January 1 to August 23, 2023, reveals a positive trend in tackling criminality in the country.
According to the Crime Research Analysis Center of the Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management, several major crime categories have experienced noteworthy decreases. Carnapping recorded the highest reduction at 31.98 percent, followed by physical injury at 15.87 percent, and rape at 14.66 percent. Other crimes that saw declines include robbery (5.03 percent), murder (2.07 percent), motorcycle theft (3.84 percent), and homicide (0.73 percent).
The PNP chief, General Benjamin Acorda Jr., expressed his gratitude for the collective efforts of PNP officers, the support of their partners, and the trust of the Filipino citizens in contributing to this positive outcome. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of sustaining this momentum and continuing to work together to build a nation free from the threat of crime.
General Acorda acknowledged the effectiveness of collaborative community efforts and the commitment of law enforcement in ensuring the safety and security of every citizen. However, he also addressed a recent tragic incident where a 15-year-old boy from Rodriguez, Rizal was allegedly shot dead by a policeman last week.
In a statement, General Acorda assured the family of the victim that justice will be served. Corporal Arnulfo Sabillo, the alleged shooter, and his reported accomplice, Jeffrey Baguio, are now in police custody. Both suspects have been charged with homicide and attempted homicide and will face a thorough and impartial investigation.
The PNP has taken immediate action by relieving all agents of the Community Police Assistance Center 5, where Sabillo was assigned, from their posts pending the completion of an impartial investigation. The incident occurred when the victim’s brother, John Ace, was riding a motorcycle and was stopped by Sabillo, who was in civilian clothes, and Baguio. Fearing for his safety, John Ace attempted to escape, resulting in a confrontation that tragically led to his brother’s fatal injury.
General Acorda emphasized that such actions do not represent the values of the Philippine National Police and acknowledged the regrettable nature of the incident. The PNP is committed to ensuring that the bereaved family finds justice and that appropriate action is taken against those responsible.
By addressing the decrease in the country’s crime rate and expressing their determination to deliver justice in the case of the teen’s death, the Philippine National Police aims to build a safer and more secure nation. As collaborative efforts continue, the PNP remains dedicated to upholding the highest standards of law enforcement and protecting the well-being of every Filipino citizen.
