Nightclub Fire in Spain Claims 11 Lives, Search for Missing Continues
At least 11 individuals have tragically lost their lives in a devastating nightclub fire in Spain, with concerns that the death toll may rise further. The fire broke out in Murcia, a city located in the southeast of the country, during the early hours of Sunday morning. Rescue teams are tirelessly searching for missing partygoers who were present when the tragic incident occurred.
According to reports, the fire occurred at the Atalayas nightclub, which consists of three interconnected venues: Golden, Teatre, and Fonda. It is believed that several birthday celebrations were taking place at the time of the incident. Outside the club, shocked and distraught young people anxiously awaited updates, embracing one another for support. One survivor, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted their harrowing experience, stating that they had managed to leave the club just moments before the alarms sounded, lights went out, and the fire broke out. Unfortunately, they have lost contact with five family members and two friends.
Diego Seral, a representative of Spain’s National Police, revealed that the deceased were found in Fonda, the section of the venue that suffered the most severe fire damage, including the collapse of its roof. The collapse of the roof has complicated rescue efforts and the identification of the victims will take time. Throughout the day, the death toll has steadily risen and now stands at 13, as reported by the emergency services.
To mourn the lives lost, Jose Ballesta, the Mayor of Murcia, has declared three days of mourning. Flags outside Murcia’s City Hall have been lowered to half-mast as a sign of respect. Mayor Ballesta expressed his devastation during an interview with Spanish TV channel 24h and mentioned that rescue teams are still searching for several individuals who have been reported missing.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. According to Mr. Seral, it is challenging to determine the exact origin of the blaze. Maria Dolores Albellan, a spokesperson for the Teatre nightclub, stated that the fire began in the neighboring club, La Fonda, before spreading to the other two adjoining clubs.
Footage released by the Murcia Fire and Rescue Service showed firefighters tirelessly battling the flames within the nightclub. The fire had caused significant damage to the roof, as depicted in the video. Upon arrival, 40 firefighters and 12 fire engines were deployed to the scene to bring the situation under control.
Mayor Ballesta informed 24h that the fire started at approximately 6 am and has now been successfully contained.
This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of fire safety precautions within establishments, particularly those that accommodate large gatherings. As the investigation into the fire continues, our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends affected by this devastating loss.
