Nepal Struck by Powerful 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake, Leaving Devastation Behind
Nepal, a country prone to seismic activity, has been hit by yet another deadly earthquake, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale. The earthquake struck on Friday night, resulting in more than 140 deaths and numerous injuries. The country is once again left in a state of devastation, with entire towns, ancient temples, and historical landmarks reduced to rubble.
This recent earthquake brings back haunting memories of the deadliest earthquake Nepal experienced in 2015, which claimed the lives of approximately 9,000 people and caused widespread destruction across the nation. The aftermath of that disaster saw over one million houses destroyed, inflicting a staggering economic toll of 6 billion dollars on the country.
The epicenter of the latest earthquake was in western Jajarkot, Nepal. The powerful quake led to the collapse of numerous buildings and was so intense that tremors were felt in parts of North India, including the national capital, Delhi.
In recent years, Nepal has faced a series of earthquakes and tremors, with devastating consequences. In October 2023, western Nepal was struck by two earthquakes measuring 6.3 and 5.3 in magnitude in the Bajhang district, resulting in injuries, damaged homes, and a landslide that blocked a vital highway.
Earlier in January 2023, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit a remote Nepalese district, causing the loss of one life and damaging over two dozen houses. The tremors were even felt as far as New Delhi.
On various occasions, both Nepal and India have experienced the shaking caused by earthquakes in the region. A 5.4 magnitude earthquake in Nepal and a 5.7 magnitude quake in the Doti District in Sudurpashchim Province resulted in casualties and the destruction of homes.
Going further back, in September 2020, Nepal faced an earthquake measuring 6 in magnitude, with tremors felt in the capital city of Kathmandu. But the most devastating earthquake in Nepal’s history occurred in April and May of 2015. With a magnitude of 7.8, it claimed the lives of around 9,000 people. A second tremor occurred 17 days later, further compounding the destruction.
To put this into perspective, the deadliest earthquake in Nepal’s history prior to the 2015 disaster was in 1934, resulting in at least 8,519 fatalities in Nepal and thousands more in India.
The repeated occurrence of earthquakes in Nepal highlights the urgent need for preparedness and effective disaster management strategies. The government must prioritize measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens, including strict enforcement of building codes, early warning systems, and robust emergency response plans.
International aid and support play a critical role in helping Nepal recover and rebuild, especially in the face of such catastrophic events. The global community must extend a helping hand to Nepal as it strives to overcome the challenges posed by these devastating earthquakes and build a more resilient future.
In the aftermath of this recent earthquake, relief and rescue efforts are currently underway in Jajarkot. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured Nepal of all necessary support, acknowledging the shared pain and solidarity between the two countries.
As Nepal mourns the loss of lives and struggles to recover, it is essential for the world to unite in providing assistance, resources, and expertise to help alleviate the immense suffering caused by these natural disasters.
