Title: MSF Denounces Attack on Gaza Convoy and Urges Immediate Ceasefire

In a tragic incident that unfolded on 18 November 2023, a devastating attack targeted a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) convoy in Gaza, resulting in the loss of a relative of an MSF staff member and the injury of another. The convoy was on a mission to evacuate 137 individuals, including MSF Palestinian staff members and their families, who had been trapped for a week in MSF premises near Al-Shifa hospital. MSF unequivocally condemns this deliberate assault in the strongest terms.

The convoy, comprising five clearly marked MSF vehicles, departed from the MSF premises at 9 am local time. Among the convoy’s passengers were 65 children whose lives had been distressingly affected by the ongoing conflict. MSF had duly informed both parties involved in the conflict about the planned movement. Following the itinerary outlined by the Israeli army, the convoy made its way towards a safer location in southern Gaza, along with numerous civilians who were also seeking a way out of the area.

After encountering extensive screenings conducted by the Israeli forces, the convoy arrived at the last checkpoint near Wadi Gaza. At that time, the checkpoint was overcrowded, causing delays that lasted for hours, despite prior communication of the convoy’s movements to the Israeli army. Fearing for their safety, and alarmed by the sound of gunshots nearby, the MSF staff members decided to turn back and return to the MSF premises, situated approximately 7 kilometers from the checkpoint.

Tragically, during the journey back, between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm local time, the convoy came under attack in Al-Wehda street near the junction of Said Al A’as Street, close to the MSF office. Deliberate strikes targeted two MSF vehicles, claiming the life of a family member of an MSF staff member and leaving another injured.

Once again, MSF urgently calls for the safe evacuation of its staff, as well as thousands of other individuals currently trapped and enduring dire conditions in northern Gaza due to the ongoing conflict. MSF firmly emphasizes the need for an immediate ceasefire as the sole viable means to establish corridors that can facilitate the secure evacuation of civilians in dire need of assistance.

We will continue to follow the developments closely, providing updates on this distressing situation as they unfold.
