Man Receives Prison Sentence for Stalking and Domestic Abuse, Despite Survivor’s 50 Attempts to Break Up
A man has been sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison after subjecting a woman to stalking and domestic abuse. Despite the survivor’s persistent attempts to break up with him more than 50 times during their two-year relationship, Jake Alexander, 31, refused to accept the decision and began stalking her through constant calls, messages, emails, and unwanted appearances at her home. He even went as far as breaking into her home while she slept and engaging in acts of violence, including strangulation.
The survivor’s ordeal came to light during the trial at Guildford Crown Court, where Alexander was found guilty of stalking, non-fatal strangulation, and perverting the course of justice. The sentencing took place on Wednesday, November 15. The court also issued a five-year restraining order against Alexander to protect the survivor.
Throughout the investigation, Alexander repeatedly ignored his bail conditions, which explicitly stated that he should not contact the survivor. Surrey Police reported that he would call numerous times from a no-caller ID, pleading with her not to speak to the police. He even offered her £1,000 in exchange for not providing a statement. Due to his persistent harassment, Alexander was remanded and has been in HMP since March.
Charlotte Barrett, the investigating officer, commended the survivor for her courage in coming forward and supporting the investigation. She expressed her hope that the sentence would help bring closure to the survivor, acknowledging the significant impact Alexander’s actions had on her life.
Surrey Police stressed their commitment to taking all reports of domestic abuse and stalking seriously. They encouraged anyone experiencing or suspecting domestic abuse to reach out to them for support. The force also directed individuals affected by similar issues to the information available on their website, where specialist support and practical assistance could be found.
It is essential to raise awareness about domestic abuse and ensure that survivors are protected and supported. By reporting these crimes and seeking help, survivors can take steps towards reclaiming their lives and breaking free from abusive relationships.
