Google CEO Sundar Pichai remains confident in the company’s AI strategy and potential despite facing challenges and the recent launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Pichai claims that Google is well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities presented by AI.
In an interview with WSJ, Pichai emphasized that Google is moving quickly and highlighted recent product announcements, such as new features in Gmail and Google Docs. The introduction of Bard, a technology based on Google’s LaMDA language model, has also generated significant attention and excitement among users.
When asked about Bard being late to the game, Pichai explained that Google wanted to ensure a good product-market fit and that industry trends may have affected timelines. He emphasized that being the first to market isn’t always necessary, citing Google’s success in areas where they weren’t the first to develop products.
Regarding Bard’s launch, it is currently available only to select users in the US via a waitlist. Users in India do not have access even to join the waitlist. In comparison, OpenAI has already made ChatGPT available to the public and has rolled out the GPT-4 update, which improves the chatbot’s speed and reliability.
Pichai expressed confidence in Google’s ability to capitalize on the AI technology moment. He assured that the company is moving quickly and strategically to do so.
