Former Home Secretary Accuses UK Prime Minister of Betrayal, Predicts Record Election Defeat
In a shocking turn of events, Suella Braverman, the former Home Secretary and Conservative leader, has launched a scathing attack on British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, accusing him of betraying her and the country. Braverman, who was recently sacked from her position, has accused Sunak of failing to fulfill his promises regarding issues such as illegal immigration and rising anti-Semitism. She has also predicted a record defeat for the Conservative party in the upcoming elections.
Taking to social media, Braverman expressed her disappointment at being asked to leave the government, but stated that it was for the best. She revealed that she had accepted the offer to serve as Home Secretary based on certain conditions and firm assurances from Sunak, despite his lack of personal mandate to be Prime Minister. Braverman claimed that her support played a pivotal role in Sunak’s victory in the leadership contest.
However, she alleged that Sunak has repeatedly failed to deliver on the key policy priorities they had agreed upon. Braverman outlined four specific assurances that she claims were not upheld: reducing overall legal migration, incorporating notwithstanding clauses into legislation to stop boats carrying illegal immigrants, delivering the Northern Ireland Protocol and Retained EU Law Bills, and issuing statutory guidance to protect single-sex spaces and empower parents.
Braverman criticized Sunak’s handling of the Conservative government’s ambitious Rwanda Plan, accusing him of betraying their agreement by refusing to leave the European Convention on Human Rights and other obligations that restrict the government’s power to address the issue of illegal immigrants. She warned that if the UK apex court rules against the Rwanda Plan, it would undermine the Conservative leadership.
The former Home Secretary also accused Sunak of failing to address the rise in anti-Semitism and extremism in the country since the recent attacks on Israel by Hamas. She criticized his response as uncertain and lacking the qualities of leadership, alleging that he had been reluctant to acknowledge the severity of the threat and disagreed with her on the need for changes in the law.
Braverman concluded her public statement by declaring that Sunak’s plan is not working, emphasizing that the Conservatives have experienced record election defeats under his leadership. She urged him to change course urgently, highlighting her own achievements in office, which included the recruitment of police officers and the enactment of various laws related to public order, national security, and anti-social behavior.
The former Home Secretary stated that she will continue to support the government in pursuing policies aligned with a genuine conservative agenda. However, her scathing criticism and predictions of a record defeat for the Conservative party indicate a deep rift within the party and raise further questions about Sunak’s leadership.
The fallout from Braverman’s accusations and the divisions within the Conservative party will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the political landscape in the UK. As the nation faces multiple challenges, including immigration, security, and extremism, it remains to be seen how Sunak will respond to the allegations and whether he can unite his party and regain the trust of the British people.
