Flag Football Added to 2028 Olympics: NFL Stars Eager for Gold
Flag football will make its official debut as a sport in the 2028 Summer Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), in a meeting held in Mumbai, India, approved the inclusion of five new sports in the Olympic lineup. Alongside flag football, baseball/softball, cricket, lacrosse, and squash will also be featured.
This marks the first time that flag football and squash will be part of the Olympic Games. Cricket, on the other hand, will return to the Olympics after a long absence since its last appearance in the Paris Olympics in 1900. Lacrosse, a sport played in St. Louis in 1904 and London in 1908, will also be reintroduced.
The NFL, recognizing the significance of flag football’s inclusion, has pledged its support for the sport in the Olympics. Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed the league’s commitment to strengthening flag football’s position in the Olympic movement in the long run.
As news of flag football’s Olympic inclusion spread, NFL players have expressed their excitement and willingness to participate. Miami Dolphins’ wide receiver Tyreek Hill, on his podcast It Needed to be Said, shared his interest in representing the United States and striving for a gold medal.
Hill stated, Just being able to say, ‘Hey, I was able to play on an Olympic level and compete for a medal for the U.S.’ That would be special. Who wouldn’t want to do that? Travel to L.A. and compete in a flag championship. If they’re serious about bringing flag football, sign me up. Sign the Cheetah up.
Former NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski also showed eagerness to play, jokingly hoping there won’t be any tryouts and that he will be automatically accepted. He said, I’m in. I’m going for that if there is flag football in the Olympics in 2028.
While the specific rules and eligibility criteria for flag football at the Olympics have yet to be established, the possibility of competing on such a prestigious stage is undeniably enticing for NFL players. Reports indicate that the NFL is open to allowing players to participate in the Olympics, fueling further enthusiasm.
The prospect of assembling a dream team to represent their country in the Olympics is an enticing idea for many NFL players. Hill expressed his excitement, saying, You know how amazing it would be to assemble a superteam to play in the Olympics? That would be crazy. To be able to go to the Olympics and actually win a medal.
With the inclusion of flag football, fans can expect a thrilling display of talent and athleticism in this fast-paced sport during the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. As the event draws near, the world will be eagerly watching to see which NFL stars will take the stage and compete for global gold in flag football.
