Driver and Owner of SUV in Viral Road Rage Incident Served Show-Cause Orders by LTO
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has taken action against the driver and owner of an SUV involved in a highly publicized road rage incident with a cyclist in Marikina City. The LTO served show-cause orders (SCOs) to both parties, setting in motion an investigation into the incident.
In the viral video, the SUV can be seen colliding with the bicyclist before the driver exits the vehicle and engages in a physical altercation with the cyclist. The entire incident caused significant traffic congestion and drew widespread attention.
LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II has called upon the bicyclist to submit a notarized written complaint and other supporting documents to aid their investigation. The LTO-National Capital Region office is keen on gathering all available evidence to ensure a thorough examination of the incident.
LTO-NCR director Roque Verzosa III issued separate SCOs to both the registered owner and the driver of the white Nissan Patrol with plate number NFY-4437. Their compliance is requested in the form of notarized affidavits explaining why they should not be held accountable for violations of Republic Act 4136, which pertains to the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.
The registered owner and the driver of the SUV are facing charges of reckless driving, obstruction of traffic, improper person to operate a motor vehicle under RA 4136, as well as disregarding traffic signs under Joint Administrative Order No. 2014-01.
The SCO was served to the registered owner at their residence in Novaliches, Quezon City, while the driver received their SCO at their home in Antipolo City.
To emphasize the seriousness of the matter, Mendoza expressed that the vehicle’s registration would be subjected to a preventive suspension for 90 days unless the case is resolved earlier.
This case has garnered public attention due to the alarming confrontation displayed in the video footage. The LTO’s response in issuing show-cause orders highlights the government’s commitment to road safety and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
It is crucial to prioritize the safety of all road users and to discourage instances of road rage that threaten public welfare. The LTO’s swift action in this case serves as a reminder that such behavior will not be tolerated, and appropriate legal consequences will be pursued.
The investigation will proceed with the aim of gathering all relevant facts and testimonies to ensure a fair and just resolution. Regular updates will be provided as the case progresses through the legal system.
As road users, it is essential that we prioritize responsible and respectful behavior on the streets. Respect for traffic laws, consideration for others, and patience can contribute to safer roads for everyone. Let us collaborate in creating an environment where incidents like this are minimized, and road rage becomes a thing of the past. Together, we can work towards a more harmonious and secure transport system.
