The earthquake, measuring 6.4-magnitude, struck the country last night, leaving the affected region in ruins. In the aftermath of the quake, Nepal has experienced around 10 aftershocks, with a 3.5-magnitude tremor hitting the area earlier today. Dr. OP Mishra, the Director of the National Center for Seismology (NCS), has highlighted two crucial factors that contribute to the severity of seismic events in the Himalayan region. Firstly, the timing of these events plays a significant role, and secondly, the structural integrity of buildings in the area is crucial. Dr. Mishra underlines that it is not the earthquake itself that poses the main threat to human lives, but rather the quality of construction in the region.
Nepal’s Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ visited the Jajarkot area to meet the affected people. The government has instructed officials to position ambulances near the helipad of Nepalgunj Airport and military barracks to ensure quick access for emergency services.
