Cleveland-based HBM Architects Receives Top Award for Library Renovation in West Virginia
Cleveland-based architecture firm HBM Architects has been honored with the prestigious Cleveland AIA Honor Award for their exceptional renovation and expansion work on the Kanawha County Main Library in Charleston, West Virginia. This achievement comes as a result of the 2023 award program organized by the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
HBM Architects, known for their expertise in library design, has established a strong reputation in Cleveland with their successful renovation of the South Branch of the Cleveland Public Library in 2019. Their outstanding work on the Kanawha County Main Library, an 80,000-square-foot project valued at $25 million, has now garnered recognition at a national level.
The West Virginia chapter of the AIA has also recognized HBM Architects with an honor award for their remarkable contributions to the library renovation and expansion project. This dual recognition highlights the firm’s commitment to delivering excellence and innovation in their designs.
The Cleveland AIA Honor Award was judged by a panel of esteemed architects, chaired by Carol Ross Barney, founder of Ross Barney Architects and recipient of the 2023 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal. With over 58 entries in professional categories and 26 entries in student categories, the competition was fierce.
Several other notable projects were also recognized at the award ceremony. Vocon, another Cleveland-based architecture firm, received the Honor Award in interior design for their remarkable work on the new Cleveland Foundation headquarters, located at East 66th Street and Euclid Avenue.
DLR Group, in collaboration with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, won the Merit Award for architecture for their project in the Arts District at Ohio State University. The $138.2 million project integrated the Timashev Family Music Building and the Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts Building with adjacent structures.
Other honorees include Horton Harper Architects, Vocon, AODK Architecture, Secoy Architects, AECOM, Bowen, and PATH, among others. The student category showcased the talent of budding architects from Kent State University, with impressive designs focusing on housing, parks, and community spaces.
The Cleveland AIA awards ceremony celebrated excellence and creativity in architecture, showcasing the remarkable projects that have shaped the city’s landscape.
