China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC) Nigeria Ltd. has announced plans to expand water supply in Nigeria, benefiting 2.5 million residents. The project, known as the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project, aims to increase water supply capacity by constructing four pipeline loops, adding 480,000 cubic meters per day. The initiative is not only a water supply project but also a comprehensive plan to enhance the quality of life in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
CGC Nigeria Ltd.’s Water Supply Division has extensive experience in engineering projects and possesses internationally competitive water project construction capabilities. Since 2001, CGC has built over 100 water plants in 36 states of Nigeria, serving the daily needs of 70 million people. The organization has been instrumental in improving economic and social development in Nigeria.
The Greater Abuja Water Supply Project, which commenced in May 2021, is a significant infrastructure development in Nigeria’s capital. Financed by the Export-Import Bank of China and managed by the Federal Capital Development Authority, this project involves the construction of 415 kilometers of ductile-iron water distribution pipelines with diameters ranging from DN1500 to DN200. Once completed, the project will alleviate water scarcity in 50 districts, benefiting an estimated 2.5 million residents.
The project’s impact goes beyond providing water supply solutions. It aims to enhance the quality of life in the FCT by delivering safe, reliable, and ample water to its inhabitants. By connecting the final stretch of the water supply system, the project will significantly improve living standards and residents’ quality of life. The expansion in water supply capacity from 240,000 cubic meters per day to 720,000 cubic meters per day will address the long-standing water shortage in the FCT.
Additionally, the project will create employment opportunities, directly employing over a thousand indigenous workers during the construction phase and indirectly generating more job opportunities. It will stimulate local employment and income growth, nurturing a group of Nigerian local talents and enhancing their skills and quality. Furthermore, the project promotes sustainable development by allowing the existing water plant to operate at its maximum capacity, reducing resource waste.
This initiative by CGC Nigeria Ltd. will strengthen the FCT’s water supply system, providing a crucial foundation for economic, social, and cultural development. It will also bolster Nigeria’s international image and soft power. CGC is a reputable Chinese company that has been involved in various sectors, including construction, agriculture, mining, drilling, real estate, manufacturing, and trade in Nigeria.
By expanding water supply infrastructure, CGC is making a significant contribution to improving the lives of millions of Nigerians. The Greater Abuja Water Supply Project serves as a testament to the strong partnership between China and Nigeria, enhancing cooperation for mutual development and progress.
