Madhya Pradesh Sees Rise in Dalit Atrocities: Youth Beaten to Death, Mother Assaulted
In a disturbing incident that highlights the ongoing atrocities against Dalits in Madhya Pradesh, a young Dalit man was beaten to death in the Sagar district, while his mother also faced a horrific assault. This incident has sparked outrage and once again brought the issue of Dalit discrimination to the forefront.
Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for turning Madhya Pradesh into a laboratory of Dalit atrocities and criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence in the face of continuous oppression and injustice faced by Dalits and tribal communities in the state.
Kharge took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his concerns. He pointed out that the BJP-led government has failed to address the alarming rate of crimes against Dalits in Madhya Pradesh. He criticized Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for his superficial attempts to wash the feet of underprivileged individuals for the cameras, calling it an attempt to hide his government’s failures and inaction.
The incident that triggered the latest wave of anger involved a 28-year-old Dalit man named Nitin Ahirwar, who was allegedly beaten to death. Shockingly, his 49-year-old mother was stripped by a group of nine people after they refused to withdraw a sexual harassment complaint lodged by the victim’s sister. According to the police, the prime accused, Vikram Singh, and eight members of his family had been pressuring the victim and his family to retract the sexual harassment case filed against Singh in 2019.
Authorities wasted no time in apprehending all the suspects, and they now face legal proceedings for their heinous acts.
Dalit rights activists and organizations have been calling for stricter laws and more robust implementation to curb the increasing number of atrocities against Dalits in the state. The incident further exposes the deep-rooted caste-based discrimination that continues to plague society.
It is important for the government to take immediate action and ensure justice for the victims. Only through swift and stringent punishment for the perpetrators can society begin to address this ongoing problem.
