Alberta’s Justice Minister Calls for Tougher Bail Reform to Address Rising Crime Rates
Amid growing concerns over rising crime rates in Alberta, the province’s Justice Minister, Mickey Amery, has called for a hardline approach to bail reform, particularly when dealing with repeat offenders. Speaking at the annual United Conservative Party convention, Amery emphasized the need for Alberta’s prosecutors to adopt a firm stance on granting bail, taking into account an individual’s history of serious or repeat offenses.
Amery highlighted the concerns of Albertans regarding rising crime rates within their communities. He pointed to a criminal incident in downtown Calgary in April 2022, which involved an individual released on bail, as an example of the recidivism contributing to these concerns.
The discussion on developing safe cities during the convention also featured Alberta’s Public Safety Minister, Mike Ellis. Ellis addressed the pressing issue of the opioid crisis in the province, emphasizing his government’s focus on increasing treatment capacity to help those struggling with addiction. He contrasted this approach with what he described as the safe use approach, emphasizing the importance of providing a pathway to treatment and preventing recidivism in addiction.
The safe cities session was part of the second annual general meeting of the United Conservative Party, held at the BMO Centre in Stampede Park, Calgary, on November 3-4.
Concerns about personal safety were echoed by attendees of the convention. One female participant disclosed feeling unsafe taking public transportation and even opted to pay for parking instead. Another party member highlighted the observed increase in delinquency and degeneracy in recent years, particularly in Calgary.
When asked about the factors contributing to the shift in the province’s public security environment, a member of the United Conservative Party pointed to the portrayal of law enforcement as villains and a tendency to idolize individuals contributing to societal disorder. They emphasized the importance of taking a stance against this phenomenon.
The call for a harder stance on bail reform is part of a broader effort to address the rising crime rates in Alberta. By considering an individual’s history of serious or repeat offenses when granting bail, the justice system aims to mitigate the risk of recidivism and enhance public safety.
